Full Circle Ag Teaches Cattle and Livestock Safety at Farmers Union Safety Camp

Cattle & Livestock Safety

Working with the children at the Farmers Union Safety Camp was a great experience.  It is important that we teach the younger generations about safety in the farming and ranching environment. The agricultural industry comes with many needs for safety concerns, but with the right tools and safety knowledge, it can but a fun career to work towards.

McKenzie and I discussed cattle and livestock safety. One of the topics we touched on was cattle trailer safety – what to check for before transporting livestock, proper clothing to wear, and cleanliness upkeep for not only yourself but for the livestock as well.

We also brought in a bottle calf to show the kids. We taught them the proper ways to approach animals when coming upon one, as well as the signs to watch for if a cow is angry or upset and may try to approach you. The kids were able to safely enter the pen, one by one, and pet the calf.  They really seemed to appreciate that.

I enjoyed hearing all the stories the kids had about their grandparents, parents, or uncle’s farm and what they have experienced in those environments. Teaching them what to do (and not to do) in different situations was enlightening and I look forward to participating in the safety camp again next year.
