Weekly Insights - May 7, 2018

Another beautiful South Dakota day. Temps are in the upper 70’s and there’s a typical South Dakota wind blowing. Due to the low humidity, temps, and wind, our corner of the world is under a High Fire Danger Warning. This probably doesn’t catch most people’s attention but being a Firefighter with the NMFD in Britton, I keep my eyes peeled to the sky for any signs of smoke. Please be cautious in the fields.

Everywhere you look, more tillage and planting are getting started. If you stop in one of our agronomy centers, please be cautious as people, trucks, loaders etc. are going hard to keep ahead of the guys that put food on our tables. Which brings up another point…fuel prices and supply. There have been some musings about supply, but NOTHING confirmed. It comes along with the oil producers that are members cutting production to balance supply. Prices; on the other hand, are an issue. Going back through past price sheets, diesel is up $.28 month over month. Prices were up approximately $.03 on the week. The first large jump in March was due to military actions in Syria. The latest market driver seems to be whether the US will pull out of the Iranian nuclear agreement. My take on this is that geopolitical issues have more of an effect on energy prices than energy. I don’t expect much downside to the market considering the time of the year, and until after the 12th which is when decisions need to be made with Iran.
